Every time a waterborne coating is applied on metal, flash-rust phenomenon, which is immediate corrosion of metal substrates, is of concern. Anticorrosion Additives for Hydrostatic Tests
A hydrostatic test is a way in which pressure vessels such as pipelines, plumbing, gas cylinders, boilers and fuel tanks can be tested for strength and leaks. The test involves filling the vessel or pipe system with a liquid, usually water, (which may be dyed to aid in visual leak detection) and pressurization of the vessel to the specified test pressure. During the test procedure, corrosion of metallic parts of the device can occur due to the contact with water, even if only for a short time.
ASCOTEC® has developed a specific corrosion inhibitor for this application, ASCOTRAN®-L. When added to the test process water at very low dosages, the ASCOTRAN®-L provides a total protection of metallic elements, both during and after the test procedure.

Anticorrosion Additives for Metals Temporary Protection
During machining, metals can be stored for varying periods of time and be exposed to an aggressive environment such as humidity or polluting gases.
Corrosion developing on the surface will then disturb subsequent operations (coating application, chemical treatment, etc.). Protection during these periods is then necessary. We refer to this as temporary or inter-stage protection.
Anticorrosion additives developed by ASCOTEC® for temporary protection are the ideal solution to replace greases and protecting varnishes which are often difficult to remove and not easy to use. The way ASCOTRAN® will interact is very specific. Their barrier effect is ensured by the formation of a monolayer of chemically sorbed molecules on the metal surface. There is no need to eliminate this molecular protecting film before an assembly or painting operation.

ASCOTRUST® – Rust converter additives
ASCOTRUST® is a range of innovative, liquid-form, and tannic acid-free rust-converting additives for waterborne coatings that is ecolabel compliant and VOC free.
These additives provide rust-converting properties to the coating layer and enable direct applications on rust or on poorly prepared substrates.
They ensure an efficient rust-blocking effect as soon as the paint is applied and form a passivation layer between the substrate and the coating layer; this helps to maintain the coating’s anticorrosion performance, despite adverse substrate conditions.
They can be used in both waterborne clear-coatings and paints. A waterborne anticorrosion clear-coating containing ASCOTRUST® can be used as a rust-converting pre-treatment which will perform better than tannic acid-based formulations or solvent borne alkyd-based oils.
A waterborne metal paint based on ASCOTRUST® provides the following properties:
- Prevention of the rust “migration” through the paint layer, even on recently rusted surfaces.
- Preserving the coating’s color.
- Avoiding strong de-rusting operations before painting, without loss of performance.
- Not compromising the coating anticorrosion performance on non-rusted substrates.
In addition, ASCOTRUST® completes the action of the antiflash-rust additive on very reactive substrates.
